Wine enthusiasts will not want to miss Dalmatian Wine Icons Festival, an event organized by Wine of Dalmatia Association, dedicated to the incredible wine offerings of Dalmatia. Dalmatian winemakers visit their capital for their annual wine presentation, so anyone visiting Croatia in fall should not miss this promenade tasting held on 28th of October 2025, taking place in beautiful hotel Esplanade, Zagreb. The festival brings together the region’s leading winemakers, showcasing Dalmatia’s finest wines, focusing on matured and ageworthy wines, that have already received highest acclamation in an intimate and educational setting. The event is an excellent opportunity to taste indigenous varieties while connecting with passionate local producers who are deeply committed to their craft and will be attending personally to present their wines.

 

In addition, there will be a masterclass about Plavac Mali held by our renowed wine expert, Mr. Saša Špiranec.

 

Wine of Dalmatia Associatio is one of four regional wine association in Croatia that covers the entire Dalmatian region meaning four different counties and the entire area from Zadar to Konavle, south od Dubrovnik. Dalmatia is a treasure trove of indigenous wine varieties and the cradle of winemaking in Croatia that covers around 32% of all vineyard surface in Croatia. The Association organizes two wine festivals each year, one large spring festival in March, in Split, and this other fall one, slightly more intimate in Zagreb.

Davide Bortone is an award-winning Italian wine journalist and critic based in Milan. He is the editor-in-chief of Winemag.it, one of the most-read Italian wine magazines, and a contributor to Wine-Searcher and Vertdevin. With over 20 years of journalism experience, Bortone switched from crime reporting to wine writing about ten years ago, bringing a pragmatic and independent approach to his work. He is a jury member at major European wine competitions, including Mundus Vini. Bortone is also recognized for his expertise in Balkan and Eastern European wines and curates the annual guide “Top 100 Italian Wines.” His work is known for its objectivity and focus on emerging markets and trends in the wine industry. Notably, as an Italian journalist, he represents the Croatian side in the “Prošek vs. Prosecco” case.

Ivan Barbić
Ivan Barbić holds the prestigious Master of Wine title, shared by only 409 people worldwide. He was born in Zagreb but grew up and was educated in Switzerland. He graduated as a food technology engineer at ETH Zurich with a thesis at the Agroscope Research Station for Viticulture in Wädenswil, analyzing wine flavors. He has worked in the wine industry for nearly twenty-five years: first in wine research at Agroscope in Wädenswil, then as head of sales for oenological products. Afterwards, he worked as a wine buyer for Coop, head of purchasing at Bataillard, product manager for wine at Denner, and is now a strategic buyer for Bataillard. His independent activities include consulting for various wine producers in Switzerland, Spain, and Croatia, serving as president of Maître Conseil en Vins de France from 2006 to 2008, and writing for magazines such as Schweizerische Weinzeitung (www.schweizerische-weinzeitung.ch), Vinum (www.vinum.ch), and the Croatian food and wine magazine Iće & Piće (www.iceipice.hr). He is also chairman of the jury for La Sélection in Basel (www.laselection.ch).
